PETE LONG– Clarinet

With "Itchy Fingers"
Pete toured Brazil, Venezuela, North Africa, Russia and Europe during his three year stay there, working with, amongst others, Dizzy Gillespie, John Scofield, Chick Corea and Supersax.He played the West End for the next 6 years.  His versatility on many different woodwind instruments stood him in good stead, most notably on the notoriousClarinet solo in the closing sequas returned to bandleading at the head of   the Echoes Of Ellington. This is a 21 piece band which sets out to re-create the Duke Ellington sound by using original manuscripts from the Smithsonian Institute in Washington DC, and has achieved great critical acclaim and commercial success. Recently, Pete’s skills developed as front man for the Echoes Of Ellington have led him to presenting Big Band Special, the weekly magazine show for big band buffs on BBC Radio 2, and talking on the early morning news review on GLR. Pete was recently involved in live and studio work with Jools Holland’s Rhythm and Blues Orchestra, the BBC Radio Big Band, arranging for and directing the poll-winning 9;20 De-Luxe.Pete has worked with a diversity of popular icons from Vinnie Jones to Lionel Richie and The Blind Boys Of Alabama to Sting. Working with Jools Holland has also enabled Pete to arrange music for Sir Paul McCartney, Chrissie Hinde, Jane Horrocks, Ray Davies and the unique talents of Marianne Faithfull!
Pete will be feautirng with the Ronnie Scott Jazz Orchestra on 20th July at Ronnie's Jazz Club.

 Musical Director for Rick Astley, Bette Midler (UK only) and the BBC TV Show  'Johnny Vaughan Tonight'.He has played live and recorded with many bands and musicians including Jamie Cullum, Elvis Costello, Rick Wakeman, Pete Erskine,Chaka Khan, Lulu, Billy Ocean, D:Ream, Seal, Sax Appeal, The Zappatistas and Jim Mullen.

                                      JULIAN STRINGLE– Clarinet/Sax

   Julian is the the best clarinettist to emerge in British jazz for several decades" (John Dankworth CBE). He is the UK jazz clarinettist admired by American jazz legends. He made his TV debut at 15 and has played on concert, festival, club, broadcast and recording sessions with: Peanuts Hucko, Wild Bill Davidson, George Chisholm, Kenny Baker, John Parricelli, Digby Fairweather, Roy Williams and Jim Mullen

 Pianist for 23 years with the James Last Orchestra.
          John as a combo player as played with many of the greats such as
          Bud Shanks, Ken Peplowski, Scott Hamilton, Harry Allen, Spike Robinson,
          and he is the arranger and pianist for Harri's latest album "Meet Me Midnight."
    PAUL MORGAN– Double-bass
      
Leeds College of Music - Jazz Course - 1976; NYJO - 1979-82, BBC Radio Orchestra (principal bass), working mainly with the big band. Don Lusher Big Band 1986 to date. Grew up accompanying visiting Americans at the Concorde Club, went on to work with the likes of Zoot Sims. Peggy Lee and Ronnie Scott. Now mainly playing legitimate bass in film and TV, studios. Regular at the Pizza and Bulls Head, Barnes. Was the bassist for the film Chicago.

Completed studies at Leeds College of Music 1980 and moved to London. 1982-83: played with Tommy Chase Quartet. 1986-80: co-led Jazz Renegades. 1988-92: with Humphrey Lytellton. 1988-98: led Pizza Express Modern Jazz Sextet. Recent recordings with Dave Newton, Brian Lemon, Tony Coe, Ken Peplowski and Warren Vache. He has dominated the British Jazz Awards for the last 10 years, having won the Alto section in 1993/95/97/99, the clarinet award for 1994/96/98 and being voted the top baritone player in 1998, 2000 and 2002. In 2001 Alan also received the prestigious BBC Jazz Instrumentalist of the Year award. The Sherlock Holmes Suite for Octet & Narrator; Songs for Unsung Heroes written with Alan Plater, featuring Liz Fletcher(vocals); Bruce Adams/Alan Barnes Quintet: Alan Barnes/Bruce Adams Duo

JIMMY HASTINGS—Tnr. Sax,
Over the years Jimmy has been a member of orchestras accompanying Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jnr., Tony Bennett, Sarah Vaughan, Aretha Franklin, and many other singers, and has also worked for Nelson Riddle, Robert Farnon, Henry Mancini and Benny Carter. On the jazz scene he has enjoyed spells with Red Rodney, Art Farmer, Bill Berry, Lanny Morgan, Billy Mitchell and Al Grey. Jimmy joined Humphrey's band on alto saxophone, clarinet and flute in 1993. Jimmy is also a member of the John Dankworth Generation Band on baritone saxophone, bass clarinet, clarinet and flute. Jimmy is Professor of Jazz Saxophone at the London College of Music and was also Professor of Saxophone at the Royal Marines School of Music in Portsmouth from 1998 to 2004.
               
JOHN HORLER– Piano,
John Horler is a highly accomplished jazz soloist, piano accompanist and composer. Born into a musical family in Lymington, Hampshire, John counts Bill Evans, Chick Corea, Richie Beirach and Kenny Wheeler as significant influences. He has been the lynchpin of Cleo Laine and John Dankworth’s band since the early 1980s, and has appeared with Zoot Sims, Barbara Streisand, Placido Domingo, Paul Tortelier, Mel Tormé, Chet Baker, Pepper Adams, Kenny Wheeler, Elton John, the London Symphony and London Philharmonic Orchestras and the BBC Big Band. John was a featured member of alto saxophonist Peter King’s quartet for many years, and has worked extensively with reeds legend Tony Coe. In 1992, John was honoured as an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music. He was voted ‘Jazz Pianist of the Year’ by the critics at the 2002 British Jazz Awards. The Belfast Telegraph said of John’s playing: "his musical pedigree shone through with complete mastery of the keyboard, rhythmic elegance and dynamic skills always a feature."
                 
ALEC DANKWORTH– Double-bass,
Studied bass at Berklee College, Boston. Since then he has worked with artists ranging from Stephane Grappelli to Abdullah Ibrahim. Projects with Nigel Kennedy have included a duet recording of Duke Ellington's 'Black, Brown and Beige' suite. He joined the Van Morrison group in 1995, touring and recording three albums. In '97 he spent a year in New York, performing with the Duke Ellington Orchestra. He then worked with The Dave Brubeck Quartet for 2 years, recording 3 CDs. Alec now performs with vocalists Cleo Laine, Elaine Delmar, Georgie Fame and Jacqui Dankworth.  Alec has recorded with Buddy de Franco, John Williams, James Galway and the London Symphony Orchestra. Artists he has performed with include Mose Allison, Guy Barker, Eddie Daniels, Billy Eckstine, Georgie Fame, Stephanne Grappelli, Johnny Griffin, Pete King, Abdullah Ibrahim, Julian Joseph, Marian McPartland, David Murray, Anita O'Day, Dave O'Higgins, Courtney Pine, George Shearing, Tommy Smith, Clark Terry, Lew Tabakin, Stan Tracey, Mel Torme, and the Royal Ballet! He has performed at Carnegie Hall, the Hollywood Bowl, the Sydney Opera House and the Royal Albert Hall.
                   BOBBY WORTH– Drums   £12/14
British Jazz Award winner Bobby has played with many of the top visiting international jazz artists such as Ken Peplowski, Warren Vache, Scott Hamilton, Spike Robinson, Howard Alden and all of UK's top jazz trios including John Horler, Dave Newton, John Pearce, Brian Dee, Richard Busiakiewicz to name a few.  He has been responsible for instructing a generation of jazz drummers.

Ray's TV appearances include the hit BBC 1 show ‘Strictly Dance Fever' where he performed “It Don't Mean a Thing if it Ain't Got That Swing'. Backed by a 35 piece orchestra Ray performed alongside amongst others Katie Melua and Will Young at the BBC's VE Day Concert in Trafalgar Square.The film and advertising cinema community have always liked Ray's music which is why they have in the past used his tracks for a Levi's advert and in the Jude Law movie Enigma. Hollywood is no exception with the producer's of the latest Hilary Duff and Heather Locklear movie, ‘The Perfect Man', securing the rights to Ray's self penned song ‘Givin' Up Givin' Up. The movie went on worldwide release at the end of July 2005.At the 2006 BBC Jazz Awards Ray was nominated for a second year in a row. This time in the category of ‘Best of Jazz’. The nomination came at the release of his new album 'Hey There' - The 15 track album consists of all time classics like ‘That’s Amore’ and ‘You’re Nobody Till Somebody Loves You’ mixed with dancefloor classics like ‘Mambo Italiano’ and the stomping ‘Mutton Leg’.  Ray has headlined at the world famous Ronnie Scott Club.Ray has toured and appeared on TV all over the world

Studied at Royal Scottish Academy of Music.Won Young Jazz Player of the Year 1991.Lead own group.CDs released; " I Won't Dance" 2000. "How My Heart Sings" 2005.Also 2-tenor group with Jim Tomlinson and 2-clarinet group with Julian Stringle. Clarinet soloist in Gala Artie Shaw concert in Dublin National Concert Hall in 2006 and Benny Goodman Carnegie Hall Concert in 2007.

                                                  
KEN McCARTHY- Keyboard
Ken studied composition at the Guildhall School of music and played in the experimental bands of Mike Westbrook, John Surman and Mike Osbourne.
He later based himself in Amsterdam and toured Europe and Japan with many visiting American Jazz stars. He broadened his horizons to TV and recording sessions and orchestral work. He has also developed a career as a musical director and arranger, his credits include many West End shows including – “Bubbling Brown Sugar”, “42 Street”, “Barnum” and “Joseph and his Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat”,“ Ken has also been personal accompanist and director for Dame Vera Lynn, the late Roy Castle and singer Vince Hill. He has always had a keen interest in “classical music” A very experienced musician with a long successful musical career spanning 40+ years. He is responsible for most of the trios unique arrangements.

ANDRE MESSEDER - Double-bass
Andre has toured the world entertaining the troops, performing with artists such as Harry Secombe, Vera Lynn, Frankie Howerd, Jim Davidson and Frankie Vaughan.Broadcast work has included appearances on BBC TV’s Pebble Mill at One show playing with American artists Brook Benton, Nancy Wilson, Kay Star and Buddy Greco, as well as numerous sessions with the BBC Radio Orchestra. Andre toured for several years with  Roger Whittaker  and has also undertaken extensive tours with Dean Martin, Bruce Forsythe, Shirley Bassey, Buddy Greco,Vic Damone and the great Jack Jones.

VIC ASH - Lead Tenor Sax/Clarinet with the BBC Big Band
Turned professional with Kenny Baker's Band in 1950. He was the first musician to play modern jazz on the clarinet in the UK. 1953, joined Vic Lewis Orchestra followed by his own, various sized groups - mostly quartets. Topped Melody Maker Poll for 8 years on clarinet in the mid 1950-60's. 1963, joined John Dankworth Orchestra for 3 years as a featured soloist. Has also worked with supporting groups on tours with Miles Davis, Dave Brubeck, Dizzy Gillespie & Buck Clayton. US tours. Latest CD April 1995 'The Eyes Have It' - with his own quartet. Continues to be a member of the BBC Big Band in addition to doing solo and quartet guest dates 
PHIL PHILLIPS - Keyboard/Vocals
 Phil led top class bands for many years on the famed Mayfair nightclub circuit and as pianist, has accompanied many famous cabaret artists including Leo Sayer, Marti Caine. Whilst considered by the jazz fraternity to be the very best function band piano/vocalist in the UK, he is also a noted composer and lyricist counting amongst his many creations the brilliant theme for the Jimmy Young Show.  
ANDREW CLEYNDERT- Double-bass
His first professional experience was as resident bassist at the George Chisolm Club in Manchester where he backed visiting Jazz soloists including Americans such as Art Farmer and Joe Newman. On moving to London in 1982 Andrew quickly established himself as a highly versatile player, working with the cream of Uk and visiting musicians - Bobby Wellins, Don Weller, Red Rodney, Bud Shank, Lee Konitz to name but a few. He toured in the Caribbean, the Middle East and Europe with Ronnie Scott, and Cananda and China with Stan Tracey Other tours include working with American piano players Benny Green and most recently James Williams with drumming legend Ed Thigpen, New York saxophonist Jon Gordon, trumpeter Conte Candoli, and guitarists Herb Ellis and Mundel Lowe. He has released two albums as co-leader. Andrew has taught on various summer schools including the Glamorgan Summer School, The Jazz Academy at the Royal Academy and the Berkshire Jazz Weekend as well as taking further study himself under double bass soloist Tony Haugham. Andrew has recorded with Gene Harris, Dave Newton, Stacey Kent, Gerard Presencer, to name just a few.

Worked with Eddie Thompson's trio from 1960 to 1986, also with Ted Heath Band & Stephane Grappelli's trio as well as visiting American musicians including Ruby Braff, Lockjaw Davis, Ben Webster, Harry Eddison, Billy Eckstine, Scott Hamilton, Joe Newman, Peggy Lee, Bob Wilber, Lionel Hampton. Has worked in the USA with Bobby Rosengarden & toured Europe with Charlie Antolino & played with Val Wiseman's 'Lady Sings the Blues'. 2002:   Worked with American vocalist Jane Powell, recording "Jane in London Live" with John Pearce, Ralph Salmins, Jim Mullen, Julian Stringle and Danny Moss. Also studio work, tours and festivals.
